A Comparative Study on Anxiety about Aging of Older Adults in Korea and the United States

Abstract
The purposes of this paper were to examine the aging anxiety level of older adults and investigate the differences in aging anxiety level by selected socio-demographic factors, psychosocial factors, aging related factors, and to identify factors influencing aging anxiety of older adults in Korea and the United States. The research subjects were 474 older adults(320 Koreans, 154 Americans) living in Korea and the United States. They were interviewed, using the structured questionnaire and the data were analyzed by SPSS 15.0 for Windows. The results indicated that the level of aging anxiety for Koreans was 2.90 and for Americans was 2.30/5.0, resulting that the aging anxiety level of older adults in Korea is much higher than that of older adults in the U.S.A. Results of bivariate analyses indicated that the variables related to the aging anxiety for older adults in Korea were age, education, growing up area, subjective health and economic status, illness status, level of social activity participation, satisfaction with social support, self-esteem, sense of mastery, mental health, satisfaction with life, level of perceived generational differences, level of preparation for old age, attitudes to old people, quantity and quality of contact with younger generation. The variables related to the aging anxiety for older adults in the U.S.A. were age, satisfaction with social support, self-esteem, sense of mastery, mental health, satisfaction with life, level of preparation for old age, attitudes to old people, quantity of contact with younger generation. Multiple regression analyses showed that the strongest predictor affecting aging anxiety of older adults in Korea was sense of mastery followed by self-esteem, attitudes to old people. For Americans, the strongest predictor was attitudes to old people, followed by quantity of contact with younger generation, self-esteem, satisfaction with life. Implications for policy, practice, and research were further discussed.
